Strikely speaking

Now that the dust has settled, let’s look at this word “strike’’. Whether legal or not, it struck me that you can use the word for what it really means without getting into trouble.

Here’s my cheat sheet:

Workers in metalworking industry: “We should strike …while the iron is hot’’

Sportsmen: “Isn’t it three strikes …and then we’re out?’’

Admen and such-like: “Isn’t this striking? We’re all dressed up to stop work.’’

Unionists: “We’re striking a blow for higher wages…so we are staging this sit-in’’

Construction and outdoor workers: “We are stopping work because of lighting strikes these days.’’

Zookeepers: “What wildcat strike? They’re still in their cages.’’
